How to Export Your Sound Wave as a Video: Step-by-Step Guide

Last updated on December 15, 2025

Video export guide

Video export is one of the most exciting ways to share your sound wave art. Instead of a static image, you can create an animated MP4 video where your waveform bars come to life, synced with your audio. This guide will walk you through the entire process, from preparation to sharing your final video.

Before You Start

Requirements

Before exporting a video, make sure:

  1. You're using an uploaded audio file: Video export only works with audio files you've uploaded to WaveVisual. Spotify songs cannot be exported as videos due to licensing restrictions.
  2. Your design is complete: Customize your colors, background, text, and other elements before exporting.
  3. You have export credits: Video exports require credits, just like image exports. Make sure you have enough credits in your account.
  4. Your audio duration is within limits: Video exports are limited to a maximum of 10 minutes. This applies to the trimmed duration if you've trimmed your audio, or the full audio duration if no trimming is applied. If your audio exceeds 10 minutes, the MP4 export option will be disabled.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Create or Open Your Design

Start by creating a new design or opening an existing one in the WaveVisual editor.

Step 2: Upload Your Audio File

Make sure you're using an uploaded audio file (not a Spotify song):

  1. Go to the Audio tab
  2. Click Upload audio file
  3. Select your audio file (MP3, WAV, M4A, or other supported formats)
  4. Wait for the waveform to generate

Important: If you're currently using a Spotify song, you'll need to download the audio file separately and upload it to WaveVisual for video export to work.

Step 3: Customize Your Design

While your design doesn't need to be perfect, this is a good time to:

  • Choose your color scheme
  • Set your background (color or image)
  • Add text if desired
  • Adjust waveform settings (thickness, spacing, height)

Remember: Only the waveform bars will animate in the video. Backgrounds, text, and images remain static.

Step 4: Go to the Download Tab

Click on the Download tab in the editor sidebar.

Step 5: Select MP4 Format

In the Download tab:

  1. Look for the File Type section
  2. Select MP4 as your export format
  3. If MP4 is not available, it means you're using a Spotify song or the design doesn't have an uploaded audio file

Select MP4 format

Step 6: Choose Video Size

Select your desired video size:

  • Optimized: Smaller file size, good for social media
  • 1080p: Standard HD quality
  • Large: Higher resolution for professional use

For most social media platforms, optimized or 1080p works perfectly.

Step 7: Start the Export

Click the Download or Export button to start the video rendering process.

Step 8: Wait for Rendering

Video rendering takes time, especially for longer videos. You'll see:

  • A progress indicator showing rendering status
  • Estimated time remaining
  • The video will be ready when rendering completes

Tip: Shorter videos (5-30 seconds) render much faster than longer ones.

Step 9: Download Your Video

Once rendering is complete:

  1. Your video will be ready to download
  2. Click the download button
  3. Your MP4 file will be saved to your device

Tips for Best Results

Video Length

  • Social media: 5-15 seconds works best
  • Presentations: 10-30 seconds is ideal
  • Showcases: Up to 60 seconds for longer previews
  • Maximum limit: Video exports are limited to 10 minutes. If your audio exceeds this limit, use the trim feature to select the most important segment.

Design Considerations

  • High contrast colors: Make sure your waveform colors stand out against the background
  • Simple backgrounds: Clean, simple backgrounds work best for video
  • Text placement: If adding text, place it where it won't interfere with the animation
  • Aspect ratio: Consider where you'll share the video (square for Instagram, 16:9 for YouTube)

File Size Management

  • Shorter videos = smaller file sizes
  • Lower resolution = smaller file sizes
  • Use "Optimized" size for social media to keep files manageable

When to Use Video vs. Static Images

Use Video Export When:

  • Sharing on social media (Instagram, TikTok, Twitter)
  • Creating presentations or slideshows
  • Showcasing your design in motion
  • Adding dynamic elements to websites
  • Creating previews or demos

Use Static Image Export When:

  • Printing your design
  • Using in documents or PDFs
  • Creating wall art or physical products
  • When file size is a concern
  • For designs that don't benefit from animation

Common Use Cases

Social Media Posts

Create eye-catching posts for:

  • Instagram feed posts and stories
  • TikTok videos
  • Twitter/X posts
  • Facebook posts

Best practices: Keep videos short (5-15 seconds), use vibrant colors, and ensure text is readable.

Presentations

Add dynamic elements to:

  • PowerPoint presentations
  • Keynote slides
  • Portfolio showcases
  • Client presentations

Best practices: Use 10-30 second clips, ensure high contrast for visibility on projectors.

Website Integration

Use videos for:

  • Product previews
  • Feature demonstrations
  • Landing page animations
  • Portfolio showcases

Best practices: Optimize file size for web, consider autoplay settings, and provide fallback images.

Troubleshooting

MP4 Option Not Available

Problem: The MP4 format option doesn't appear or is disabled in the Download tab.

Solutions:

  • Make sure you're using an uploaded audio file (not Spotify)
  • Check that your design has audio associated with it
  • If MP4 is disabled: Your audio duration exceeds the 10-minute limit. Use the trim feature to select a segment under 10 minutes, or the MP4 option will remain disabled
  • Try refreshing the page

Video Taking Too Long to Render

Problem: Video rendering is taking a very long time.

Solutions:

  • Shorter videos render faster - try exporting a 10-15 second clip first
  • Check your internet connection
  • Be patient - longer videos can take several minutes

Video File Too Large

Problem: The exported video file is very large.

Solutions:

  • Export at a smaller size (use "Optimized" instead of "Large")
  • Create shorter videos
  • Use external video compression tools if needed
